The difference between the Watergate break-in happening then or under the Bush Presidency now is the wide gulf between IMPEACHABLE CRIME and HEROIC surveillance acts on behalf of NATIONAL SECURITY.
This is spot-on accurate and true. A similar "break-in" today into the Democratic national HQ would be legal according to Bush's self-proclaimed "inherent" powers. The President would be protected, aided and abetted by a compliant House, Senate and Supreme Court.
His "heels-dug-in" religious/patriotic/moneyed base is the key enabler of this wrong-is- right, black-is-white world which is nothing more than a bridge backwards to the eras of dictatorships and which are, paradoxically, the antithesis of democracy.
We can only hope that we awaken BEFORE this phenomenon has us fully crossed over, much like Alec Guinness did before destroying the Bridge over the River Kwai and the Japanese horde's advance.

You make excellent points Richard. The only thing I would add is that "if Watergate happened today", the following would also happened:
1. It is likely that Americans would never know because the press no longer has the courage to investigate and report illegal behavior of the US government.
2. If somehow it did become known to the public, the Whitehouse would call for a Special Prosecutor to investigate who illegally leaked the information to the press.
3. The media would spin the government's disqualifying propaganda that the whole mess is being exaggerated by the "Bush Haters", "the Michael Moore-George Soros types" and the liberal press.
